About

NBA Top Shot is the official digital collectibles platform of the NBA.

On the platform NBA fans can own, buy, sell, and trade officially licensed highlight clips called Moments. Built on the blockchain, it brought sports card collecting into the digital age, attracting millions of collectors worldwide.

NBA
Challenge

A digital object has no weight, no texture, no physical presence.

With physical trading cards, ownership feels intuitive, you hold it, you see it, you put it in a sleeve. With digital collectibles, that sense of ownership has to be engineered. NBA Top Shot needed UX and visual systems that made Moments feel genuinely rare, genuinely owned, and genuinely worth collecting, not just files on a screen. Without that, the emotional core of collecting collapses.

A digital object has no weight, texture, or physical presence

Ownership feels obvious with a physical card, but not with a digital one

2D images on a screen might not feel rare enough

The emotional pull of collecting had to be engineered from scratch

The Solution

We designed and developed the functions that made NBA Top Shot's collectibles feel tangible.

We redesigned the Pack Opening experience, focusing on motion design and microanimations that make each Moment feel like it physically exists.

The Activity Feed showed the community's activity in real time, so collectors never felt like they were alone in an empty room, they felt part of something happening right now.

We rebuilt the Player, Team, and Set pages so that community data naturally feeds into the collector's decision-making process. We also helped collectors monitor the current status of their own personal collecting goals, making progress visible and the journey worth following.

The NBA Top Shot digital collectibles platform features were built on an enterprise-grade technology stack designed for scale and performance. The frontend uses HTML5, TypeScript, React, and Next.js, with GraphQL powering the data layer and Webpack managing the build process. The backend runs on Go for high-performance services, with PostgreSQL as the database. Web3 and Flow blockchain integration enables digital ownership and collectible functionality. The platform is containerised with Docker, orchestrated via Kubernetes, and deployed on Google Cloud infrastructure, served through Nginx.
